Spring Celebrations in the Heart of London

The Royal Horticultural Society marks the start of the gardening season with three London shows in April

Gardeners of all levels are being encouraged by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to come out of winter hibernation and celebrate the floral splendour of spring with three different RHS London Shows throughout April.

European Orchid Show & Conference, 9 – 12 April 2015
From 9 – 12 April, the Royal Horticultural Halls will be filled with orchid displays by some of the world’s finest orchid growers, orchid societies and botanical gardens as London and the RHS host the 17th European Orchid Show & Conference. The show provides an opportunity to admire thousands of orchids and marvel at their astonishing shapes, colours and scents. Visitors will be able to purchase some highly collectible and new species. A Preview Evening of awards, refreshments and live music will be held on Wednesday 8 April.

RHS Great London Plant Fair, 14 – 15 April 2015
From orchids to a show bursting with many late-spring plant selections, the RHS Great London Plant Fair (14 – 15 April) offers fantastic displays of spring colour and scent alongside a vast range of seeds, plants, flowers and seasonal goods available to purchase from leading nurseries, tradestands and growers.

A highlight at this year’s show will be a garden designed by the finalists for this year’s RHS Young Designer of the Year ahead of their design debut at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park in July. The three candidates have been set a group challenge by the RHS to work together and build a front garden suitable for parking a car but also a practical and attractive outdoor living space. The garden will demonstrate how these spaces can be used to benefit the environment, reduce flood risk and increase biodiversity. Principal Horticultural Advisor Leigh Hunt will be on hand to offer inspired visitors advice on how to use their front garden spaces.

Other highlights include a full programme of talks from how to grow your own cocktails and spring foraging to reimagining London as a National Park and the importance of front gardens in the modern city. For those who want to get creative at the show, The Secret Adventurer’s Club will be running workshops on how to create your own birdfeeder.

The Royal Watercolour Society will also be displaying beautiful artwork reflecting the changing seasons and the life of the four RHS Gardens with its ‘Cultivation and Creativity’ exhibit.

For those who can’t make the show during the day an elegant English Garden Party will take place in the Lindley Hall on the evening of 14 April. Visitors will have the chance to celebrate the arrival of spring in style and enjoy the show complete with live music, mouthwatering local and seasonal British produce from The Sunday Kitchen, unusual and interesting beers and ciders from microbreweries and seasonal floral cocktails from the Midnight Apothecary. The Lawrence Hall will remain open in the evening for late-night shopping.

RHS London Alpine Garden Show, 26 April 2015
Completing the RHS London Show programme in April is the RHS London Alpine Garden Show in association with the Alpine Garden Society on Sunday 26 April. Held in the RHS Lindley Hall, the show will provide a rare opportunity to admire and purchase from an outstanding and diverse range of alpine plants. Visitors will have the opportunity to gain expert advice form alpine growers and watch hands-on demonstrations. This year’s show has a focus on mountains and plant hunting with talks throughout the day.

About the RHS
The Royal Horticultural Society was founded in 1804 by Sir Joseph Banks and John Wedgwood for the encouragement and improvement of the science, art and practice of horticulture. We held our first flower shows in 1820, were granted a Royal Charter in 1861 and acquired RHS Garden Wisley, our flagship garden, in 1903. From our first meetings in a small room off London’s Piccadilly, we have grown to become the world’s largest gardening charity.

Today the RHS is committed to providing a voice for all gardeners. We are driven by a simple love of plants and a belief that gardeners make the world a better place. 211 years on we continue to safeguard and advance the science, art and practice of horticulture, creating displays that inspire people to garden. In all aspects of our work we help gardeners develop by sharing our knowledge of plants, gardens and the environment.
