RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2018 Highlights

Thursday 15 February 2018

• Iconic Horticultural Heroes celebrated with new feature welcoming world-renowned Piet Oudolf • Thousands of vibrant Verbena • NEW ‘Evolve’ experience exploring the evolution of plants through time

From 2-8 July, The Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) largest flower festival supported by Viking will return to the grounds of Hampton Court Palace with exciting new content for 2018 including iconic horticulture, a mass planting of Verbena bonariensis and an immersive feature taking visitors on an explorative journey through time.

For the first time ever, the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show will be celebrating iconic figures of the horticultural world, welcoming influential landscape designer, nurseryman and author Piet Oudolf. Internationally acclaimed for transforming urban spaces, the Dutch designer will be bringing his iconic naturalistic style to the show, creating a whimsical walk through feature. Using bold drifts of herbaceous perennials and grasses synonymous with his style of planting, the border will sit opposite the historical palace to create a picture perfect array of colours and textures.

Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in a purple meadow of Verbena bonariensis. Thousands of these delicate flowers will create a dazzling display of lilac, lavender and violet shades sweeping along the Long Water for visitors to wander through and enjoy this elegant summer flower.

The show will take visitors on a journey through time, exploring the evolution of plants on earth. ‘Evolve: Through the Roots of Time’ will guide visitors through barren landscapes prior to the Cambrian era over 500 million years ago, to the lush tropical jungles of the Jurassic period, and into the present day where visitors will walk through a meadow of flowering plants which first appeared during the Cretaceous time. Housed inside a dome structure and spilling out into the showground, the theatrical and educational experience will open curious minds to see how fossils were formed and seeds developed.

Floral Marquee highlights will see 85 specialist nurseries including eight National Plant Collection holders from Plant Heritage who will be celebrating their 40th anniversary. Salutation gardens, Moore & Moore, English Iris Company, Hedgehog Plant and Garden Nursery, Limecross and New Forest Hosta are amongst the new floral exhibitors at this year’s Show, alongside Hampshire Carnivorous Plants who will return as the Master Grower 2018.

Other highlights include the inspirational gardens and annual Festival of Roses which will see a cornucopia of colour and scent.

Gemma Lake, RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show Manager says: “We are delighted to reveal our exciting new line up to the Show. We want to make sure that our visitors feel inspired, whether they’re keen gardeners or just want to know where to start! With a festival feel, it is a great summer’s day out and the best place for anyone wanting ideas, gardening advice, beautiful plants and gardening goods to grow a garden they love.

“This year promises to bring a festival of flowers to Hampton Court Palace with hands on workshops, amazing horticultural sights and delicious home grown dishes from our tempting new ‘Dig In’ food area.”

The RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show will run from 2 – 8 July with an exclusive Preview Evening* held on Monday 2 July. For further information or to buy tickets, please visit the RHS website at www.rhs.org.uk/hamptoncourt

About the RHS
The Royal Horticultural Society was founded in 1804 by Sir Joseph Banks and John Wedgwood to inspire passion and excellence in the science, art and practice of horticulture. Our vision is to enrich everyone’s life through plants, and make the UK a greener, healthier, happier and more beautiful place. We believe everyone in every village, town and city should benefit from growing plants to enhance lives, build stronger, healthier, happier communities and create better places to live.

We held our first flower shows in 1820, were granted a Royal Charter in 1861 and acquired RHS Garden Wisley, our flagship garden, in 1903. From our first meetings in a small room off London’s Piccadilly, we have grown to become the world’s largest gardening charity. At our gardens and shows and through our scientific research, publications, libraries and our education and community programmes we inspire a passion for gardening and growing plants, promote the value of gardens, demonstrate how gardening is good for us and explain the vital roles that plants undertake.

The RHS is committed to bring the joy of gardening to millions more people, inspire the next generation of gardeners and invest in the future to safeguard a £10.4 billion industry employing more than 300,000 people. We are entirely funded by our members, visitors and supporters. RHS membership is for anyone with an interest in gardening. Support the RHS and help us secure a healthy future for gardening.
