People’s Choice award brings new plants to public attention

Between July and September 2016 visitors to Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Garden Wisley voted for their favourite summer bedding plants from a choice of 80 planted across the garden, with Solenostemon CAMPFIRE earning the top spot.

Over the ten-week period more than 1,600 visitors cast their votes in the annual RHS People’s Choice initiative, which was created to draw the public’s attention to the wide range of new plants available for gardeners to enjoy.

The RHS worked in partnership with world-leading plant breeding companies in order to deliver one of the biggest RHS People’s Choice initiatives to date. The visitors’ top three favourite varieties will be available to buy from RHS plant centres from May 2017.

While Solenostemon CAMPFIRE occupied the top position, two selections of petunia were runners-up, with Petunia CASCADIAS RIM FANTASY claiming the second place and Petunia AMORE’ QUEEN OF HEARTS named third in the poll.

Solenostemon scutellarioides CAMPFIRE (‘Uf12823’) has a brilliant blood-orange colour and excellent long-season performance under the most demanding garden conditions. For five weeks out of the ten-week voting period it continuously held the top spot, emerging as the clear winner.

Petunia CASCADIAS RIM FANTASY (Cascadias Series) has beautiful bright violet flowers outlined with a clear white rim. Its slightly mounding shape make it particularly suitable for containers and hanging baskets. Bred by Danziger from Israel, the cultivar received 9.2% of the total votes and held the top spot for three weeks out of the ten of the voting period.

Petunia AMORE’ QUEEN OF HEARTS (Amore’ Series), bred by Danziger, was named in celebration of the heart-shaped deep pink petals with a yellow stripe that make up this attractive flower. It is semi-trailing and excellent in baskets and containers. While it was voted in the top spot for just one week out of ten, it consistently secured a high number of votes.

Speaking about the People’s Choice initiative, RHS Trials Development Manager Mark Heath said: “It is exciting that plant breeders are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is available in the UK in terms of cultivated varieties of plants. That the RHS is able to help introduce these new cultivars to the gardening public underlines the vital role the charity plays in the life of UK gardening.

“We are delighted to be able to exhibit such a rich selection of garden plants that are still new to the UK market in order to inspire more people to try out cultivars they may not have been aware existed.”

About the RHS

The Royal Horticultural Society was founded in 1804 by Sir Joseph Banks and John Wedgwood to inspire passion and excellence in the science, art and practice of horticulture. Our vision is to enrich everyone’s life through plants, and make the UK a greener, healthier, happier and more beautiful place. We believe everyone in every village, town and city should benefit from growing plants to enhance lives, build stronger, healthier, happier communities and create better places to live.

We held our first flower shows in 1820, were granted a Royal Charter in 1861 and acquired RHS Garden Wisley, our flagship garden, in 1903. From our first meetings in a small room off London’s Piccadilly, we have grown to become the world’s largest gardening charity. At our gardens and shows and through our scientific research, publications, libraries and our education and community programmes we inspire a passion for gardening and growing plants, promote the value of gardens, demonstrate how gardening is good for us and explain the vital roles that plants undertake.

The RHS is committed to bring the joy of gardening to millions more people, inspire the next generation of gardeners and invest in the future to safeguard a £10.4 billion industry employing more than 300,000 people. We are entirely funded by our members, visitors and supporters. RHS membership is for anyone with an interest in gardening. Support the RHS and help us secure a healthy future for gardening.
