Spring Plant Fair at RHS Garden Hyde Hall

Monday 8 April 2013

RHS Garden Hyde Hall, near Chelmsford, is holding its annual Spring Plant Fair on Saturday 20 to Sunday 21 April 2013. The event, organized by the Essex Group of Plant Heritage, will see a number of specialist nurseries displaying their wares.

From herbs and exotics to fruit and seeds it’s a must for plant lovers of all abilities. With around 40 exhibitors to excite and inspire, visitors will be able to pick up plants and expert advice from some of the region’s top growers.

New for this year is Mark Haslett with his collection of Louisiana Iris. Mark holds the largest collection of its kind in Europe after first being dazzled by their wonderful colours and huge blooms. He said “My first irises grew well and rewarded me with blooms, I was hooked and decided to try to build a future National Plant Collection. I’m passionate about showing how well these plants can be grown in the UK.”

As the plant fair falls within the celebrations for National Gardening Week, there will be plenty of activities for the whole family. The children’s sow and grow activities will see them making their very own Earth Dumplings containing a mixture of wildflowers seeds and soil. These dumplings can be taken home and sown.

The wildflower theme continues with mini meadow planting demonstrations. RHS expert, Andrew Hellman will share his knowledge, to help visitors create their own meadows at home. He’ll also give advice about what plants not only look good, but are perfect for pollinators too. All attendees will receive a free packet of seeds (while stocks last).

About the RHS
The Royal Horticultural Society was founded in 1804 by Sir Joseph Banks and John Wedgwood for the en¬couragement and improvement of the science, art and practice of horticulture. We held our first flower shows in 1820, were granted a Royal Charter in 1861 and acquired RHS Garden Wisley, the first of our gardens, in 1903. From our first meetings in a small room off London’s Piccadilly, we have grown to become the world’s largest gardening charity.

Today the RHS is committed to providing a voice for all gardeners. We are driven by a simple love of plants and a belief that gardeners make the world a better place. 209 years on we continue to safeguard and advance the science, art and practice of horticulture, creating displays that inspire people to garden. In all aspects of our work we help gardeners develop by sharing our knowledge of plants, gardens and the environment.
