RHS Gardens Winter Events Programme December 2018 - February 2019

A chill in the air is no barrier to getting outdoors this winter, with a full programme of events set to keep visitors busy throughout the season at the four Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Gardens: RHS Garden Harlow Carr in North Yorkshire; RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex; RHS Garden Rosemoor in Devon; and RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey.

With activities ranging from twinkling trails lighting up the gardens after sunset, shopping for hand-crafted Christmas gifts from artisan makers and even exotic orchids and jungle creatures to discover, there’s every reason to wrap up warm and get outside.

30 November–2 December & 7–9 December: Christmas Gift Fair with Made in Essex, RHS Garden Hyde Hall

Thursdays–Saturdays until 29 December: ‘Glow’ Winter Illuminations, RHS Garden Harlow Carr
See the most northerly RHS garden in a different light this winter as special lighting effects bring a touch of magic and a burst of colour to the Lake, Winter Walk, Streamside and Alpine House. www.rhs.org.uk/harlowcarr

Thursdays–Saturdays until 5 January: ‘Glow’ Magical Garden Illuminations, RHS Garden Rosemoor
Follow the festive illuminations along a new route, extended to the Lake for the first time, with colour-changing lights brightening up trees, shrubs and sculptures to delight and enthral. www.rhs.org.uk/rosemoor

Until 5 January: Christmas Trees by the WI, RHS Garden Hyde Hall
Women’s Institute members from across the county of Essex return to Hyde Hall this festive season to adorn the garden’s Christmas trees with hand-crafted decorations www.rhs.org.uk/hyde-hall  

Until 24 February: Winter Sculpture Exhibition, RHS Garden Rosemoor

1–2, 8–9, 15–16 & 18–23 December: Santa Stories and Gingerbread, RHS Garden Wisley

1–2 December: Christmas Antiques Fair, RHS Garden Rosemoor

8 December: Traditional Festive Wreaths Workshop, RHS Garden Rosemoor
Local floral designer Sarah Pepper will demonstrate how to use dried fruits, ribbons, cones and seasonal foliage from Rosemoor’s gardens to create a traditional wreath for your front door. www.rhs.org.uk/rosemoor

12 December: Behind-the-Scenes Laboratory Tour, RHS Garden Wisley
Discover what happens behind the doors of Wisley’s iconic Laboratory and gain an insight into the amazing work taking place, including a visit to the Research Library, usually open by appointment only. www.rhs.org.uk/wisley  

15–16 December: Christmas Food & Craft Fair, RHS Garden Rosemoor

15 December–20 January: Textiles, Prints and Photography Exhibition, RHS Garden Rosemoor
A joint exhibition by Jenny Bone, Alan Dilly, Douglas Anderson and Kevin McDonagh featuring wildlife and landscape artworks in a range of media. www.rhs.org.uk/rosemoor  

20–24 December: The Magic of Christmas Santa Experience, RHS Garden Rosemoor
Santa makes a stop at Rosemoor to entertain the whole family with a festive storytelling session in his magical workshop theatre, joined by his elves and Jack Frost as they help youngsters write a letter to Santa and prepare reindeer food ready for Christmas Eve. www.rhs.org.uk/rosemoor

26 December: Boxing Day Woodland Walk, RHS Garden Hyde Hall

5–20 January: Rob Munday Art Exhibition, RHS Garden Wisley
The Little Black Gallery brings holographic artist Rob Munday’s hyper-realistic photo boxes to the Glasshouse Gallery, for a fascinating look at exotic blooms in 3D. www.rhs.org.uk/wisley  

5 January–7 February: Japanese Art Exhibition, RHS Garden Harlow Carr
See handmade pictures in the style of Hiroshige, the last great master of the Ukiyo-e (‘pictures of the floating world’) tradition using traditional woodblock printing techniques, as the garden hosts its first ever exhibition of Japanese art. www.rhs.org.uk/harlowcarr

11 January: Winter Walk and Talk, RHS Garden Wisley

2 February–3 March: Embroidery Exhibition, RHS Garden Harlow Carr

2–3 February: Snowdrop Weekend, RHS Garden Rosemoor

7 February: Children’s Storytime, RHS Garden Harlow Carr

9 February–3 March: ‘Lost Words’ Mosaic Exhibition, RHS Garden Harlow Carr

9–10 February: Scarecrow Making Weekend, RHS Garden Hyde Hall

9–10 February: Orchid Exhibition, RHS Garden Rosemoor

16 February–3 March: February Half Term Family Fun – Eco Superheroes, all gardens, dates and times vary
