RHS Garden Wisley Seeks a Crop of Allotmenteers

Monday 9 February 2015

Applications are now open for 2015 community allotment programme. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is looking for 12 keen beginner gardeners to take part in an informative and practical eight-month allotment course at its flagship garden in Wisley, Surrey.

Starting in March, successful candidates will receive expert RHS tuition, have their own plot to tend for a year, and take away home-grown harvests. They will receive two-hour allotment master classes each month and weekly access to their plots, all in the picturesque setting of RHS Garden Wisley.

The first-class facilities at RHS Garden Wisley and expert guidance mean this is a great opportunity for novice vegetable growers.

The cost of the course is £75 which, alongside the master class sessions, includes the cost of gardening boots and seeds. All students will be provided with tools to use while on site. Students will have access to their plots every Tuesday (10.30am – 4pm) and must be able to commit to attending a two-hour tutorial at the start of each month. As the growing season progresses, access to plots will be extended to include Mondays and Fridays.

Apply by 13 February
To take advantage of this opportunity, please write to our Courses and Workshops Coordinator Amy Adams with a brief personal background (approx. 50 words), stating why you would like a beginners vegetable plot at Wisley (approx. 50 words), and indicating what you will do with your new knowledge (approx. 100 words). Please also include your postal address, email address and contact telephone number. Applications close 13 February 2015.

About the RHS
The Royal Horticultural Society was founded in 1804 by Sir Joseph Banks and John Wedgwood for the encouragement and improvement of the science, art and practice of horticulture. We held our first flower shows in 1820, were granted a Royal Charter in 1861 and acquired RHS Garden Wisley, the first of our gardens, in 1903. From our first meetings in a small room off London’s Piccadilly, we have grown to become the world’s largest gardening charity.

Today the RHS is committed to providing a voice for all gardeners. We are driven by a simple love of plants and a belief that gardeners make the world a better place. 210 years on we continue to safeguard and advance the science, art and practice of horticulture, creating displays that inspire people to garden. In all aspects of our work we help gardeners develop by sharing our knowledge of plants, gardens and the environment.
