Vintage and retro fun at the RHS’ flagship garden
Everyone is invited to the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) flagship garden in Surrey, RHS Garden Wisley, for the annual summer Garden Party, which celebrates the season in all its glory (29- 30 June 2013). RHS Members go free. The garden party will have a distinctly retro feel with makeovers, hat making demonstrations and car and tractor displays.
Visitors to the garden can also enjoy the beautiful horticultural highlights that make this time of year so special. The Rose gardens will be beginning to show the first flush of blooms, and the poppies in the Country Garden and the last of the Iris’s at the bottom of the rock garden will be looking splendid. For those seeking a tranquil respite from the hustle and bustle of the event, a walk in the pinetum will take you a relatively unvisited area of the garden.
Here is a taste of what is happening over the weekend:
- Swing dancing – join in or watch fast paced swing routines
- Live music
- Vintage makeovers
- Vintage-style hat sale and hat making demonstrations
- Meet Jo Wheatley – 2011 winner of The Great British Bake Off
- Punch & Judy shows
- Vintage cars & tractors
- Model boat display on the glasshouse lake
- Trailer rides
- Garden games
- Afternoon tea*
Everyone is encouraged to dust off their vintage clothes and come dressed for the occasion.

About the RHS
The Royal Horticultural Society was founded in 1804 by Sir Joseph Banks and John Wedgwood for the encouragement and improvement of the science, art and practice of horticulture. We held our first flower shows in 1820, were granted a Royal Charter in 1861 and acquired RHS Garden Wisley, the first of our gardens, in 1903. From our first meetings in a small room off London’s Piccadilly, we have grown to become the world’s largest gardening charity.
Today the RHS is committed to providing a voice for all gardeners. We are driven by a simple love of plants and a belief that gardeners make the world a better place. 209 years on we continue to safeguard and advance the science, art and practice of horticulture, creating displays that inspire people to garden. In all aspects of our work we help gardeners develop by sharing our knowledge of plants, gardens and the environment.
RHS membership is for anyone with an interest in gardening. Support the RHS and secure a healthy future for gardening by joining us today.
